Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce established Business Incubation Cell in 2015, for successful business ventures to pave a way to becoming commercialized business ventures. This enables them to get all the expert advice(s) and technical guidance(s) that they need to survive for a longer time, unlike most other entrepreneurial ventures that fizzle out within a few months of their launch. It facilitates the potential entrepreneurs in their mission to kick off their business and units.
under the guidance of University business Linkages , Business Incubation cell of the faculty works for collaborating with business sector.
Entrepreneurs Product Exhibition
- Organized Entrepreneurs’ product exhibition, which was held at the faculty on 29th and 30th of July 2019. 25 entrepreneurs participated; they were awarded as best entrepreneurs on their product category.
Start-up weekend
- Through the coordination of the UBL, a start-up weekend women’s edition workshop was held in Colombo with the purpose of generating entrepreneurship skills through practical knowledge and mentoring process.
As per the mandatory requirement of the workshop’s organizing team, eight female students from faculty of management studies and commerce have participated for three days. As per the event brief, the workshop was conducted. As scheduled in the Day 01 (Team Forming), our students are classified in to two groups with their own ideas and at the end of the day (Day 03) among ten different ideas, the winner and first runner-up are from our University (University of Jaffna) the winner team is from faculty of Management studies and commerce.
Wednesday Market
- Business Incubation Cell of the faculty has organized five Wednesday markets on 04., and 18th of December 1st , 18th and 29th of January 2020.
- Faculty UBL and Yarl IT jointly organized an interactive session for SMEs and students on 18th if July 2019. Purpose of this session was to make awareness on the marketing platform Ulaipali.com among SMEs and Students and train the students to facilitate the SMEs to uplift their businesses and encouraging business start-ups among the students.
- Organic farmer Mr.Hirishan launched ‘organic soup “at the faculty and distributed to students and staff regularly .
- Two Faculty Staff members from Business Incubation Cell (BIC) and five (05) students from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce participated in a workshop which held in 2019 at Green Grass Hotel. The theme of the workshop was “Registration of Local Entrepreneurs as an Exporter in Sri lanka”. It was organized by the Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The workshop was started around 9.oo a.m. More than 40 local entrepreneurs participated from North and east part of Sri Lanka. Resource persons from Department of Commerce made deep discussion about how to take the local business to international level, what are the arrangements and supports are given by the Department of Commerce and further they discussed about the current situation of international trade. In addition they issued bundle of documents which related to trade and business. Different questions are answered by the resource persons in a simple manner. Finally the president of Jaffna Chamber of Commerce made a good talk about the entrepreneurs in Jaffna District.
- Located a collection box at Student complex to collect used sarees from students & staff of our University. KAIS trading private Ltd will recollect them once in a month. This use sarees as the input material for the livelihood of women headed project initiated by ‘PARCIC’; A Japan NGO, and handed over to KAIS trading private Ltd
- jointly with the Senior Common Room (SCR), University of Jaffna, allocated a place in SCR for locating used saree collection box allocated a place in SCR for locating used saree collection box on 3rd of January 2018. ‘Saree connection’ is a project initiated by ‘PARCIC’; A Japan NGO. Used sarees are collected by this project and are recycled as input material for making clothes to sell in international market for tourist segment. First pool of used sarees was collected by PARCIC on 14th of February 2018.
- Restarted the fortnight market on every Wednesday, from 27th of December 2018 to give an awareness among University people on native products. And to enhance the relationship between the Faculty and the business community. This market has been organized on every Wednesday from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm. Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from North Sri Lanka are invited to market their product within the Faculty premises
- Entrepreneurs from Canada visited to UBL initiation and, met the students in University of Jaffna on 7th of April 2017. They shared their experiences with the students and staff. In this discussion they explored the important of Business incubators at the faculties. They promised to the University community to give assistants and networks on BIC initiations at faculties. Staff and Students of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce actively participated in this discussion.
- Business Incubation Cell of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, initiated fortnight market form 13th of December 2017 to give an awareness among University people on local products. And to enhance the relationship between the Faculty and the business community. This market has been organized on every Wednesday from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from North Sri Lanka are invited to market their product within the Faculty premises.
- Two-day discussion was organized by the University Business Linkage (UBL) to plan the creativity week which will be placed in August 2016. Students, staff, and the women micro entrepreneur have participated in this discussion. Peter Sommer (UBL consultant) discussed about the tools to reconnoiter the creativity days from five departments of our faculty and the imports of the students and staff participation in the creativity week.
- Staff of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce were participated at the workshop on business innovation training to the entrepreneurs, which was held on 10th of February 2016. At this workshop selected small medium entrepreneurs participated and shared their expectations from each faculty in Jaffna University. Our staff were conducted a team consultancy with the Peter Sommer (GIZ consultants).
- A Workshop on “electronic knowledge for Micro businesses” and “easy way for starting e-business “was organized by the incubation cell, for the micro marketers who registered at the incubation cell of the Faculty of Management studies and commerce, “for two days on 6th and 7th of May 2016, at our faculty’s Computer lab. There were 20 participants in this workshop. Food and refreshment were sponsored by Industrial Development Board (IDB).
- conducted workshop through participatory rural approach on Dairy Business Management for Small-Scale Dairy farmers, Milk traders, Transporters and Processors from 27th of June to 29th of June in Mullaithivu district. This workshop was organized by World concern, an International Non-government organization located in Mullaithivu. 25 small -scale dairy farmers, milk traders, transporters and processors Participated in the workshop.
- To explore the readiness of each department from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce to support the SMEs sector, as the person in charge Business Incubation cell, organized an Exhibition on 6th and 7th of September at the faculty, at two diverse components. One component was a market exhibition of North SMEs on the theme “Expedite Blossoming Hybrid market for the Entrepreneurs. Thirty SMEs participated in this exhibition and identified the special market segments. It was the joined event of Department of Industries- Northern province, business Incubation Cell-FMS&C, and the University business linkage initiative Program-University of Jaffna
- To explore the readiness of each department from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce to support the SMMEs sector, organized an Exhibition on 6th and 7th of September at the faculty, at two diverse components
- creative ideas of Student and staff for SMMEs development- In this constituent 07 creative ideas form Department of Marketing, 08 creativity thoughts from Department of HRM, 06 creativity notions from Department of Commerce, 09 creativity concepts from Department of Accounting, 10 creativity impressions form Department of Financial Management were fetched together to share their knowledge. UBL consultant Prof.Utz Dornberger, Leipzig University, Germany, Observed the event and expressed a positive remark to the Faculty’s initiative Programme.
- Organized a Creativity Day, under the UBL initiative programs, for solving problems of SMEs in Northern provinces. This creativity day was held on 25th of August at Green grass hotel. 06 entrepreneurs from the business Incubation cell, 15 Staff from five Departments and 30 Students from the Faculty participated in that event, she contributed as a Moderator for evaluating the expectations and feedback of Entrepreneurs from the Faculty of Management and Commerce.
- Business incubation cell, as a recommended activity by the UGC, was established at the faculty level with the senate approval, to facilitate the industrial link with the university as well as the staff and student participation for industrialist accomplishments. It ensures that the individual seeking to promote growth of their enterprises have easy access to the knowledge, experience in management, financial resources, and resourcefulness.it mostly targets the war effected business entities in the northern province of Sri Lanka.
- Women micro Entrepreneurs’ product exhibition was held at the faculty on 15th and 16th of October 2015, on the theme “penetrating platform for livelihood”. This exhibition was organized by the Incubation cell of the faculty of management Studies and Commerce. Purposes of the exhibition were to make awareness on the locally made products from war affected places, and women headed micro businesses, and giving market access to them. There were 37 women micro business ventures participated in the exhibition. Industrial based organizations, government, non-government, and private companies visited to this exhibition and made business link with the micro businesses. Cargill’s (Ceylon) PLC was a main sponsor of this event. Mr.Samuvel Nesakumar, the operational Manager North , and his team visited to the exhibition , and prepared a report on the product categories, design, packaging , quality and so on, many products have been selected by the retailers as good products as their ingredients. Suggestions made by the evaluation committee for further improvements of the products. Best three products from four categories, such as greeting cards, handicraft, food, tailoring were selected as best and they were given awards.
- Students were encouraged to visit to the business ventures in small, and micro scale, they do case study approaches through the experiences gained form these business ventures. Students come up with the business solutions as a required field assignment as a part of their studies.
- With the collaboration among the German government, University Grant commission, GIZ, and The University of Jaffna, University Business link a project was initiated at the University of Jaffna on 28th of September 2015. Faculty of Management studies and commerce coordinates with UBL initiation activities, and visited to fields to observe the current position of the industries, to have business link with the university. Our faulty staff participated to draft constitution for UBL initials with the consultation of Alfredo Suvelza (GIZ consultants).
- Students and staff of the faculty were participated in the awareness program on UBL initiation by the University of Jaffna, at the international trade fair, which was held on 29th to 31st January -2015. In this program students and the staff of our faculty made awareness on the UBL initiations and got feedback from the stake holders.
- Staff of the faculty of management studies and commerce were participated at the workshop on business innovation training to the entrepreneurs, which was held on 10th of February 2016. At this workshop selected small medium entrepreneurs were participated and shared their expectations from each faculty in Jaffna University. - Faculty betrothed in the youth development program organized by the collaborative work of European Union, UNDP, Sri Lankan government and the University of Jaffna in 2016.under this program, youth in three districts, as Jaffna, Killinochchi and Mullaithivu were targeted to initiate this empowerment activity. Staff were trained the youth entrepreneurs through field visits, and class room listening.
- With the collaboration among the German government, University Grant commission, GIZ, and The University of Jaffna, University Business link a project was initiated at the University of Jaffna on 28th of September 2015. Faculty of Management studies and commerce coordinates with UBL initiation activities, and visited to fields to observe the current position of the industries, to have business link with the university. Our faulty staff participated to draft constitution for UBL initials with the consultation of Alfredo Suvelza (GIZ consultants).
- Staff participated in the best thesis ward discussion with the Mr. peter Sommer (UBL consultant), and draft the first copy of the content of that award which will be offered to the student who will have the output which benefits to the industrial sector. Discussion also made with the dean, faculty of Management studies and Commerce.
- Staff of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce were participated at the workshop on business innovation training to the entrepreneurs, which was held on 10th of February 2016.
