EU Horizon 2020 and Europe Horizon (2021-2027)

You may be aware of EU Horizon 2020 and Europe Horizon (2021-2027) which provide substantial grants to carry out novel and innovative research in collaboration with EU institutions. However, Sri Lanka is yet to submit a higher number of proposals compared to other countries to reap the benefits.

Therefore, NSF being the focal point for EU, is keen on facilitating the process to enable Sri Lankan researchers to submit innovative and effective proposals to EU, partnering with EU counterparts and thereby participate in the above programme to tap the funding. NSF had a series of discussions with EU counterparts, tentatively identified areas for possible collaboration

Researchers who intend to submit innovative proposals in line with the areas given in the attachment are kindly requested to furnish NSF with the following information at their earliest so that we could get the process moving.

1. Broad field and tentative title

2. Collaborating institutions and scientists at home with contact details (name, affiliation, email, tel. no. etc)

2. Proposed collaborating institutions and scientists from the region

3. Proposed collaborating institutions and scientists from Europe

Potential areas for collaboration.

1. Bio-based Industries & Innovation

– Resolve supply-chain hurdles for turning residual waste streams into functional molecules for

food and/or non-food market applications (BBI-2020-SO1-D1)

– Use biogenic gaseous carbon to increase feedstock availability for the industry

– Produce food ingredients with high nutritional value from aquatic sources

– Upscale the production of bio-based platform molecules for larger market applications

– Use enabling technologies to improve feedstock availability and sustainability for the bio-

based industry (BBI-2020-SO2-R1)

– Develop bio-based solutions to recycle composites (BBI-2020-SO2-R3)

– Extract bioactive compounds from new, under-exploited and/or recalcitrant residual bio-

based streams for high-value applications (BBI-2020-SO2-R4)

– Demonstrate superior bio-based packaging solutions with minimal environmental damage

(BBI-2020-SO3-D4)

– Improve the sustainability of coatings (BBI-2020-SO3-R5)

– Provide insight on emerging technologies for bio-based value chains (BBI-2020-SO4-S2)

2. Energy Security, clean and efficient energy.

– Enabling next-generation of smart energy services valorizing energy efficiency and flexibility at

demand-side

3. Food security in a context of Climate Change

4. Value addition to mineral resources

Batteries/supercapacitors from Graphite

5. Value addition to bioresources

Green packaging from natural fibers, value added products from medicinal herbs etc.

6. Occupational safety of employees

Green approaches to improve indoor air quality

7. Textile & clothing

8. Port & shipping/Logistics and freight transport

9. Mainstreaming indigenous medicine

Any other field which Sri Lanka can leverage on within the EU context.
